Whenever I hear about a referral program of a startup, I’m only curious to find out what am I getting in return of inviting a friend. It was a free ride when Uber started it, a free meal with Zomato and other food delivery apps and a few hundred bucks on online shopping websites. These seemed like good incentives to me to get my friends on the platform.

As the industry grew, the referral programs became a norm. And as the company grew, the user incentive significantly dropped. Uber now gives me upto 50 bucks to invite a friend which doesn’t even make me consider it 😛 But why not, Uber doesn’t really need my invitations now. And imagine if they started giving free rides to their 100 million users and their 100 million friends 😀

One thing which has always been common in all these referral programs all these years is that they focus on giving a bonus to me as a user and my friend who will join. This personal user incentive, although great fades out soon. As it’s nothing but a nudge for the user to start buying their services.
